A brave new world of HMRC powers approaches – but, based on current evidence, JOHN CASSIDY doubts the department can be relied on to use its extra muscle prudently and with common sense. The Revenue appears to think no further safeguards are necessary to protect taxpayers, even though some officers use their existing authority inappropriately.
